Alitalia Airlines Suckered Us!
My wife and I have been trying to resolve what we believe is mistaken excess baggage fee on Alitalia Airlines for almost 18 months. See Details below. I have sent information repeatedly at their request with no response. Their behavior and business practices in my opinion are shoddy and indifferent at best and consumers should be warned. |

Subject: Baggage weight overcharge- Request for refund
This is to request your assistance in securing a 125 Euros (approximately $162 US) refund for an “excess baggage charge” incorrectly levied upon my wife and me on a recent Atitalia flight from Rome to Milan.
Situation
On September 15, 2005 my wife and I flew on Alitalia flight #1038 from Rome to Milan. Upon check-in at the Rome airport the Alitalia agent had a temporary problem with my wife’s ticket (which was booked through your SkyTeam partner Delta). In the confusion, we believe the agent weighed our baggage as if it were on one, not two passenger’s tickets. She claimed we were 25 Kg overweight which is impossible. None of our 4 pieces of luggage exceeded the maximum 70 lb limit (per Delta) and our total weight, all 4 items was 53 kg which was confirmed on our flight from Milan to Berlin on Alitalia where we were NOT charged any excess baggage fees. I did not argue the charge at the time because we were too close to departure (again, because of the time your agent spent sorting out your system problem with my wife’s ticket).
We encountered no problems with “excess baggage weight” on any other legs of our flights which leads my to believe it was an honest error on your agents behalf…but the magnitude of the mistake is substantial and we’d like a fair resolution to this issue as soon as possible. NOTE: Delta confirmed that if we had been over weight we would have been assessed a fee on our original flight from JFK…which we were not.
I’m sending along our itinerary information, boarding passes, e-tickets per your request and a copy of the receipt of payment (via MasterCard).
We expect a full refund of the overcharge…125 Euros…at the current exchange rate upon resolution.
Cordially,
